Aunt Sally
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What is Aunt Sally ?
Aunt Sally is an Oxfordshire pub game played by throwing
batons at a wooden doll.
The Rules of Aunt Sally
Equipment:
The Post - approx. 2 foot 6 inch x ¾ inch hollow metal
tube. The height should be adjusted so that the base of the doll is 2 feet, 6
inches from the ground.
The Iron - a 3 inches long iron bar swivel, at one end there is a small round
platform for the doll to sit on. The other end fixes into the top of a post so
that the arm can rotate.
The Dolly - a short squat skittle 5 inches high and 3¼ inches in diameter and
painted bright white.
The Batons - these are 18 inches long x 2 inch diameter made of hardwood and
known as Sticks. Each player has 6 sticks to throw for each leg.
When each baton is thrown, the thrower stands behind a wooden strip 2 inches
high. The front of the wooden strip is 30 feet from the base of the doll post.
How to Play:
A leg consists of each thrower throwing 6 batons at the doll.
Batons must be thrown underarm.
Each time the doll is knocked off the post cleanly
(without touching any part of the iron or post), it
is immediately re-seated ready for the next throw.
The number of successful hits are counted and the
person with the highest score wins the leg.
If the metal rod is hit and causes the Dolly to fall
everyone shouts 'iron'.
Singles:
A game is played over 5 legs. If the result at the
end of a leg is a draw, the winner is decided by sudden death - each player
throws a stick until one player wins.
Teams:
A team match, each team consists of 8 people and is played over 3 legs each
worth 2 points. In the event of a drawn leg each team receives 1 point. If the
result at the end of a match is a draw, the winner is decided by sudden death -
each player throws again with 3 sticks - if scores are still matched players
throw again with just 1 baton - this is repeated from 6 batons until one team
wins.
Each person from a team would play against a person from
the other team so that 8 games are played and each player plays once.
Alternatively, one side might throw first to set a total and then the other team
throws to try to beat the total.
In a pub match - after the 3 legs have been played there
is often a 4th leg known as the "BEER LEG" where the losing team buy's
the winners a pint.
